AK @ Lyn Falls (October 2008)

I am Aleta Karstad, one of those artists who are attempting to straddle traditional and electronic methods of working and of sharing our work. I am persuaded that if I share my work electronically, I may somehow be better able to support my work. I am, however, challenged by time – the time it takes to observe and draw and paint and write, and the time it takes to learn and apply new technology.

I hope to illustrate this weblog with sketches and small paintings from my hand-lettered nature journal as well as with fast and convenient photos. We shall see what emerges.

My husband Frederick W. Schueler and I have journalled both independently and together for over 30 years, and have thought (and written) a lot about the nature of natural history record keeping – philosophy, history, goals, methods, applications, and spinoffs! Our current method of journaling has evolved from Joseph Grinnell’s system through years of adaptation to our needs and preferences, into theNatureJournal
